The best Gold Coast Christmas lighting displays
Deck the halls…. or the house!
You may or may not be aware that over the Christmas period, the Gold Coast of Australia comes alive and by that I mean, it comes completely alive with Gold Coast Christmas lighting! Red, gold, green, blue, every colour under the sun!
Dancing santas, reindeers, snowmen in an area it’s highly unlikely to snow, with more lights than you can imagine, you name it, you’ll see it and adding to that fact that this is all part of a competition, you can imagine how big these Gold Coast Christmas Lighting displays get! Competition breeds the need to be better than the next person, the great lengths some competitors go to is unbelievable.
The Gold Coast plays host to the annual Gold Coast Christmas Lighting Competition, where households in residential areas enter into and compete to win the prestigious title of the best Christmas light displays in the whole of the Gold Coast. This year the title went to a residential address in Coolara Street in Tugun, winning the Robina Town Centre Grand Champion title. The house was alive with dancing and static lights, right from the roof, down the house, around the sides and onto the garden! The display also featured a row of flying reindeers coming off the roof, taking to the sky with Santa behind them. Quite a sight to behold and quite fascinating!
Because this is such a huge deal, there are bus tours around the entrant’s streets, for locals and tourists to check out the Gold Coast Christmas Lighting displays and take photos as mementos. Regular tours set off throughout the day, so check out the local timetable to be sure to get the best views. Remember your camera too, as this is one event you won’t want to miss!
This yearly competition has become legendary and the 2013 version was no different.
The winners of the Gold Coast Christmas Lighting show were:
Grand Champion – Coolara Street, Tugun
1st place – Eugaree Street, Southport
2nd place – Mintwood Place, Molendinar
High commendations went to Riverview Road, Nerang, Quombone Street, Worongary and Pomona Court, Helensvale.
Planning and preparation goes into displays throughout the whole Gold Coast and whilst the competition is the major factor, lights are all throughout towns and cities, shopping centres and along the beaches bringing a truly festive spirit.
This really does bring a new meaning to the term ‘deck the halls’. Whilst I wouldn’t want to be responsible for any of the participants electricity bills, it really does bring a festive twist to the community and brings together residents at a time of year that should do exactly that. It also helps to bring tourism into the area, which generates money, to be piled back into the local community. It’s really a win-win for everyone, whilst also showcasing the area to visitors, taking them through suburbs and areas they might not visit otherwise. What a gifted idea, bringing residents together, while helping the local tourism industry boom. Preparations are no doubt already underway for 2014’s Gold Coast Christmas Lighting competition!
